Start with the job, not the logo
A combined course-and-community platform works best when students benefit from discussing lessons, sharing progress, attending live sessions, and getting help in the same environment.
A practical shortlist
| Platform | Worth considering when… |
|---|---|
| Skool | You want a deliberately simple community + classroom setup with built-in monetization and gamification. |
| Circle | You want broader community structure, events, courses, branding, automations, and business-oriented controls. |
| Mighty Networks | You want a community-led product and should evaluate its current branded-experience and course options. |
| Kajabi | Your wider course, marketing, sales, and creator-business stack matters as much as community. |
| Discord | Real-time chat culture is central and your audience already understands server-based communities. |
| Heartbeat | You want memberships, courses, events, payments, and community in one community-business product. |
Seven criteria that prevent bad platform decisions
- Member behavior: posts, chat, lessons, events, networking, or accountability?
- Monetization: free, recurring paid, cohorts, courses, coaching, or mixed?
- Content: how structured must learning be?
- Operations: what will admins repeat every week?
- Branding: how much control is genuinely required?
- Integrations: which external systems are non-negotiable?
- Total cost: subscription, payments, add-ons, and staff time.
Why Skool belongs on the shortlist
Skool pricing checked September 2026. Skool currently lists Hobby at $9/month and Pro at $99/month. Both pricing cards list unlimited members, courses, videos, and live calls. The public pricing page lists a 10% transaction fee for Hobby and 2.9% for Pro; Skool’s payment help center adds a $0.30 per-transaction component and a higher Pro percentage for transactions above $900. Verify the live checkout and payment terms before making a financial decision.
Skool is particularly easy to test because its product is intentionally compact. If your ideal member journey is “join, introduce yourself, learn, participate, attend calls, and keep progressing,” it is a natural candidate. If you need more elaborate workflows, compare alternatives before committing.
